Sustainable Development

Government is emphasising on sustainable development from a long term perspective. In this context, the Ministry of Environment & Sustainable Development (formerly Ministry of Environment & NDU) is implementing the National Programme for Sustainable Consumption and Production 2008-2013 (SCP). The SCP Programme is being implemented in the aftermath of recommendations made at the World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) in Johannesburg in 2002. The SCP Programme aims at promoting greater efficiency in production and consumption pattern in Mauritius.

The concept of ‘Maurice Ile Durable’ (MID) was introduced in Budget 2008-2009. The main objective of the Mauritius Ile Durable (MID) concept was to make Mauritius a world model of sustainable development, particularly in the context of Small Island Developing States (SIDS).

In brief, the ‘Maurice Ile Durable’ project focuses on 5 Es, namely, energy, environment, education, equity and employment and the MID process has been approved by Government.
